gliding-song version

A few weeks back i added the poem ‘gliding’ to my blog. Today, you should be able to hopefully hear it as the song it was supposed to be in the first place. Unfortunately, WordPress wouldn’t let me  upload it directly to the blog (my guess is that you need a premium account, but I honestly don’t know why), so i’m busy uploading it to my facebook page as I write this. So if you follow the link, you should be able to find the video and like the facebook page for ‘thoughtofvg’ if you so wish. If you can’t immediately see it, try looking in the videos section of the page. At the time of writing this post, it will be the only video there.

I hope you all enjoy it, and if there is some difficulty seeing the video for whatever reason, please tell me in the comment box – and of course please comment and criticise as much as you like!

I finished a song for once! – Gliding

I did it!

It may have taken a long time, but finally I found the lyrics for a song I’ve been working on. And by found, I don’t mean I always had them sitting about on a piece of paper that I stupidly misplaced, but found where they were hiding in my head.

It seems wrong to me to say that lyrics are ‘thought’ up. Then it sounds like they are forced out in a desperate attempt to finish off something half-heartedly before the end of a strict deadline.

But no. Saying that I found them works much better. It makes those words seem more animate, more meaningful.

And that, means waiting for the words to be found rather than force words onto a song that didn’t want them.

So why the long boring bit before I actually get round to typing the lyrics onto this post? Well, bluntly put, I’m useless at putting lyrics to a song, or vice-versa. This time I have both, and am (relatively) happy with both bits, although they need refining.

Hopefully, If I can work out how, I might post the actual song on here soon, but for now enjoy the lyrics to ‘Gliding’.

.

Gliding

.

Gliding

In floating streams

Flying

To where I want to be.

And wishes

Are hard to take

But don’t stop dreaming

Or those wishes might just break.

.

Take me where you’re flying,

I want to find my purpose there,

To you it is no mystery

What lies beyond horizons,

You see me as the speck I am

And I see you the same

But I’m the one still dreaming

That I was gliding there with you.

.

Burning

In passionate desire

For freedom

The fire towers higher.

Hopeful

The time is coming near

Grateful

The path is coming clear.

.

Take me where you’re flying,

I want to find my purpose there,

To you it is no mystery

What lies beyond horizons,

You see me as the speck I am

And I see you the same

But I’m the one still dreaming

That I was gliding there with you.

.

I’m gliding

On the wing.

I’m gliding

There with you.

Faun-Zeitgeist Translation

I said a little while back that I was going to start putting translations of songs on to the blog. Today, i’m finally getting round to starting this. Although this blog is first and foremost for my poetry, I believe the work of others to be much more important than my own. Which is why I have chosen to translate German songs into English and share them with you. I will only be doing literal translations and will not attempt to turn them into neat English poetry; I’m very rarely impressed by poetry translations that choose to keep the form and rhyme as meaning is lost and the power of each word is weakened. It’s certainly true that the rhythm and flow…which I just happened to talk in about in my last post… can be easily lost in a literal translation, but whatever one does, a translation of poetry will never be as good as the original. So, Below is the original and a translation of the first song I have chosen to look at. Zeitgeist by Faun. All thanks goes to Faun!

Das Rad dreht sich weiter
Doch alles bleibt stehn
Wir versuchen im Dunkeln
Das Licht zu verstehen
Hab keine Angst und
Fürchte nur was dich
Nicht versteht

Das Rad dreht sich weiter
Doch alles bleibt stehen
Wir schließen die Augen,
Als wenn wir nicht sehen
Die alte Welt versinkt
In einem Meer
Aus Ideen

Wohin wollten wir gehen
Wo sind wir nun
Zu tief geschlafen
Um weiter zu ruhn

Noch eines wollen wir
Wenn alles anders wird
Noch eines wollen wir
Uns wieder finden

The Cycle turns further

Yet all stays the same

We try in the dark

to understand the light

Have no worry

and don’t fear what you

Don’t understand

.

The cycle turns further

Yet all stays the same

We close our eyes

as if we don’t see

The old world sinks

Into a sea

without ideas

.

Where did we want to go?

Where are we now?

too deeply asleep

to rest further

.

Still we want one thing

when everything changes

Still we want one thing;

find us again.

Below are two links to the same song-one the studio version and the other a live version. It’s worth listening to both as they have a very different feel live, and are one of the best live acts I’ve come across. If you aren’t familiar with the modern  style of ‘mittelalter’ music be aware before listening that it is rather different to most styles about at the moment.

And one last thing. Have a go at naming all the instruments used by this band. Luckily, it’s easier to get all the instruments on this song than some of their others!

We will never be the same.

You see the world in different ways,

I sometimes wonder what you see

In colours, in wonders, in them,

In goodness, in evil, in me?

My dreams are not your dreams

And we will never be the same

My thoughts are not your thoughts

And we will never be the same

But what if I understood your mind

For one brief moment,

Just a day?

Where I see scenes of black and grey

Do you see fire and jealousy?

Is it I who has the passion

Or you who has the flame?

My dreams are not your dreams

And we will never be the same

My thoughts are not your thoughts

And we will never be the same

But what if I understood your mind

For one brief moment,

Just a day?

I will never know just what you think

But while I slumber my thoughts wonder;

Who’s wrong? Who’s right? Who cares

What we even think?

My dreams are not your dreams

And we will never be the same

My thoughts are not your thoughts

And we will never be the same

But what if I understood your mind

For one brief moment,

Just a day?

Eivör Pálsdóttir

As my ‘words of the world’ post was a rather short one, I feel i’m cheating you all by just leaving it at that today. Therefore here is a little extra.

The following link is to a wonderful musician called Eivør Pálsdóttir. I wouldn’t say she is my current favourite songwriter (although she is high up there), as that is still reserved for Steven Wilson, but she is probably my favourite singer at the moment.

Depending on the song, her style varies somewhere between scandinavian folk music and big band jazz. This combination results in some really chilled out music but also some incredibly explosive song. Because of the variation, I’ll be linking two songs. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

firstly, a track that gets seriously lively. Nú Brennur Tú Í Mær . As far as I can work out (I don’t speak faroese…) the title translates as ‘Now you burn in the sea’. Anyone with a better translation, feel free to tell me!

And for her more gentle side, Do not weep

Ok, I now don’t feel so bad about writing so little in the last post 🙂

Valravn

I just realised i broke my rule of one post a day yesterday…sorry about that! I’ll be honest, I was down at the pub for a leaving party of a friend who is moving to australia in the near future. I wasn’t planning on staying out for too long so just thought ‘i’ll just write when I get back in after one drink’…of course I got back at two in the morning. Oops.

To make up for that, i’ll be writing two posts tonight; one a piece of writing, and the other a simple video introducing an amazing band to you all-Valravn.

Like my earlier post on the group ‘storm corrossion’, Valravn is quite a tricky band to describe. In regard to the vocals, the most similar singer I can think of is Björk; kind of crazy but full of energy and excitement. Their sound has a wonderful mix of modern and folky sounds, and adding in those haunting vocals makes for something quite original and in my opinion, amazing.

This is Valravn-Kelling

I know i’ve picked a video where the sound quality isn’t perfect, but it had to be this one, simply for the energy they put out here. Oh and this song’s main line sums up the band in one…

Statt up og dansa! stand up and dance!…even if the rest of the lyrics are quite dark.

Ok…now for my creative piece for tonight. I’ll post it once its finished!

I know i should write but…

Today was the final day of School for my year group. Not me though-I’m stuck there for another year so I could do a subject they cancelled in my first year in the sixth form. This means i’m not really in the mood to write, but I feel I should be living up to my new ethos of writing atleast a post a day.

I guess I can just have a short post on my personal thank you and send off to my year group. A few posts back, I listed a few possible tracks that I could play for the final assembly of the year. In the end, I settled on ‘Wait For Sleep’ by Dream Theater-A beautiful piano piece played by Kevin Moore and sung by James La Brie. I only played the piano part…mainly because it was too tricky to play and sing each part at the same time, but luckily it is a piece that sounds great just on the piano.

Here is a link to the song-‘Wait for Sleep’

and the sheet music i learnt to play the song from-Sheet Music for ‘Wait for Sleep’

Although many of my friends will soon be leaving for university once their results come, the piano is a timeless friend that can have whatever feelings you choose to give it. Today therefore I say thank you to these friends who have always but will no longer be there. Music was the only way I felt able to give a worthy enough thanks.
